CAEP corner: Standard 1, content and pedagogical knowledge
CAEP* corner is a regular feature in COEfyi to help clarify accreditation requirements for educator preparation programs. Look for more information on other components in upcoming weeks.
Today, we focus on component 1.1. This component requires candidates to demonstrate an understanding of the 10 InTASC standards at the appropriate progression level(s) 1 in the following categories:
- The learner and learning
- Content
- Instructional practice
- Professional responsibility

Standard 1. Content and Pedagogical Knowledge
The provider ensures that candidates develop a deep understanding of the critical concepts and principles of their discipline and, by completion, are able to use discipline-specific practices flexibly to advance the learning of all students toward attainment of college- and career-readiness standards.
This standard has five components:
- 1.1 Requires candidates to understand the 10 InTASC standards.
- 1.2 Requires candidates to use research and evidence to develop an understanding of the teaching profession.
- 1.3 Requires candidates to apply content and pedagogical knowledge.
- 1.4 Requires candidates to demonstrate skills and commitment that afford all P-12 students access to rigorous standards.
- 1.5 Requires candidates to model and apply technology standards.
