From the Dean: University Tragedy

It is with great sadness that I share with you that a member of the College of Education community lost her life in the tragic car accident yesterday.

The car accident involved five students. Four individuals passed away and one is in critical condition at Athens Regional Medical Center.

The students who lost their lives in the accident, following confirmation of family notification:

Kayla Canedo, 19, of Alpharetta (Franklin College of Arts and Sciences)
Brittany Feldman, 20, of Alpharetta (College of Family and Consumer Sciences)
Christina Semeria, 19, of Milton (College of Education)
Halle Scott, 19, of Dunwoody (Terry College of Business)

Agnes Kim, 21, of Snellville, remains in critical condition at this time (Terry College of Business)

As President Morehead mentioned in his press conference this morning, counseling services are available for those in need. Please avail yourself of these services if you have been personally touched by this tragedy, and share the information about this resource with others who need it. I encourage all faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants who have contact with students to be mindful of the impact this tragedy has had on a wide swath of our community at this busy time of the semester and to be compassionate with students who may have difficulty completing the semester.

The university community will come together later today for a gathering of reflection on the lives of these students at the Tate Center Plaza at 5 p.m. All are welcome to attend. There will be a brief message from President Morehead, VP Victor Wilson and President of SGA Houston Gaines.

These students will be honored at a university memorial service, along with others who have passed in the last year, on Tuesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at our University Chapel.

Please keep these students and their families in your thoughts during this very difficult time.

Best regards,
Craig H. Kennedy, PhD
Dean and Professor
