Real Talk, Real Teaching: Dialogues on Race, Racism, and Racial Violence from the #CharlestonSyllabus
Given the recent violence in Minnesota, Baton Rouge, Dallas, and Orlando, there is an urgent need for dialogue and strategies to think deeply and respond, as educators and educational professionals, to race, racism, and racial violence in schools and communities. As a pre-event to the campus-wide UGA Press Charleston Syllabus Symposium on Friday, the College of Education (with leadership by the Department of Educational Theory and Practice) will sponsor a special evening of “real talk” featuring Dr. Chad Williams, one of the editors of the Charleston Syllabus book; Dr. Anneliese Singh, our newly appointed College of Education associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion; and Arash Daneshzadeh, a leading expert in youth and restorative justice from the University of San Francisco.
This event is designed as a dialogue space where students, teachers, and community members can engage in real conversations on the history and reasons for racial inequalities and violence, and ways that educators can address the difficult realities of race, racism, and racial violence in their practices. This special event will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, in the UGA Russell Library Special Collections Auditorium.
