From the Dean: Cervero appointed professor and associate director in the Department of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Ronald Cervero, associate dean of outreach and engagement in the College of Education, has been named a professor in the Department of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Washington, DC.

The Uniformed Services University (USU) of the Health Sciences is the nation’s federal health professions academy—akin to the undergraduate programs of the U.S. military academies at West Point, Annapolis, and Colorado Springs. And like the academies, students are not charged tuition; they repay the nation for their education through service.

In addition to being on the faculty, Cervero will serve as associate director for remote campus education for the Health Professions Education (HPE) program in the Department of Medicine. In this capacity, he will be responsible for graduate level teaching, research, faculty, and student supervision, as well as administrative leadership assignments, including devising a strategic plan for low-residency and distance delivery of HPE degrees and supporting related USU initiatives such as the Global Health Distance Learning program.

Cervero served as associate dean for outreach and engagement in the College of Education from 2009-13 and has been a faculty member in the College for 30 years. In addition to his role in overseeing outreach and engagement, Cervero is a professor in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration, and Policy. Cervero returned to the College of Education in August after serving as the associate vice president of instruction in the Office of the Vice President for Instruction with a long list of accomplishments and impact on instruction, including oversight of the Science Learning Center, Experiential Learning, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Service-Learning, Academic Honesty, Washington Semester program, Online Learning, and STEM Education.

“My work with colleagues and students at the University has been extraordinarily rewarding personally and professionally, and I look forward to continuing this work by providing intellectual and organizational leadership in health professions education for one of the country’s elite health sciences universities,” said Cervero.

Cervero assumes his new position effective Dec. 1.

Please join me in congratulating Ron on his many contributions to the College and University. We will have a celebratory event in Ron’s honor in the near future and notices will be forthcoming from the Dean’s Office.

Best regards,
