From the Dean's Office: Funeral service for Dr. Bettye Smith is 2 p.m. Sunday
The funeral service for Dr. Bettye Smith will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home (East), 4355 Lexington Road, Athens.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service.
As a scholar, Bettye made many contributions to workforce education, focusing on approaches to curriculum development, contextual teaching and learning pedagogical models and practices, national content standards in family and consumer sciences education, and issues of black faculty in higher education. Her research also extended to curriculum and instruction in international education and study abroad programming.
As a colleague, Bettye was a long-term member and co-chair of the Dean’s Council on Diversity. She was a key figure in the DCOD, working to enhance and improve diversity efforts in the College and beyond.
Bettye will be missed in the College, at UGA, and in the other communities in which she interacted; and her contributions will live on in all the students she mentored and the faculty with whom she worked.
