Engaging in social justice dialogue at the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA)

Presented by Ruslana Westerlund, EdD

  • Thursday, Feb. 9
  • Aderhold Hall Room 418
  • Noon-1:30 p.m.

WIDA has a historically deep commitment to social justice. With the Can Do Philosophy at the core, WIDA has always viewed and represented multilingual children and youth through the asset-based lens in all of our products and professional development. Two most recent initiatives at WIDA have been around family engagement and race, culture, and language dialogue. By engaging in this work, WIDA aims to develop critical consciousness of our own power to take action and foster opportunities to explore and question individual biases and structural inequities (Freire, 1973; Freire, 2000; Grant, 2012; Nieto, 2010). This presentation will give an opportunity to hear how WIDA is engaging with these critical questions in the midst of the current historical events as well as federal accountability which promotes English-only agenda.

This event is sponsored by the College of Education’s Department of Language and Literacy Education.
