Faculty members, student featured on web, in news outlets
Linda Campbell, a professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Development Services, was recently quoted in the Huffington Post, while Peter Smagorinsky, a professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, recently contributed an essay to Maureen Downey’s Get Schooled blog on AJC.com. Also, associate professor Sheneka Williams was recently profiled in the Chronicle of Higher Education, where she speaks to her goals as a leader as a way to create change in education.
Shaun Goh, a student in Kevin McCully’s Exercise Muscle Physiology Lab, is featured as an “amazing student” on the University of Georgia’s website. Goh is a dual major in biology and psychology with a goal to become a physician.
Campbell lent her expertise on familial relationships to comment on the relationships children have with their siblings. For example, she said, middle children are natural-born peacemakers, while the youngest children are often attention-seekers, risk-takers and charmers. The story explored what your birth order could tell you about your love life.
Smagorinsky’s piece explored why a dedicated, effective teacher left the profession. After starting her teaching career in a rural South Carolina school district, this teacher returned to Georgia with her husband to teach in the district in which she grew up. But in one semester, she had gotten burned out by the work conditions of what many would consider a desirable district.
The profile of Williams notes that she is one of nine faculty members across UGA taking part in the Women’s Leadership Fellows program. Once determined to become a high school superintendent, she now sets her sights on breaking into university administration. “I just kept thinking, How can I most affect change in higher education? In a leadership role,” she says.
