Awareness of Need for K-12 Silent Reading Instruction: On the Decline?
- Friday, Feb. 10
- Aderhold Hall Room G5
- 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Taking into account a theoretical perspective that supports silent reading instruction, but a research literature that shows a trend toward oral reading classroom practices-, we posed the following question: To what extent are K-12 teachers enrolled in two sections of an online content literacy course aware of the need for silent reading instruction? Findings based on a convergent mixed methods design suggest silent reading instruction is a tough sell. This has serious implications for long-term English learners in an era of high-stakes testing.
