With an estimated value of $1.65 billion, the Houston Rockets’ ability to create a buzz when it comes to ticket sales and TV ratings is essential for creating stability, said Steven Salaga, a new assistant professor of sports management in the Department of Kinesiology. “From a public perspective, the team looks better on paper than it used to,” Salaga told the Houston Chronicle. “You want to sell the team when the team’s doing well.”

When UGA grad Ryan Nixon was in his first year teaching eighth grade, he found himself in a quandary: He was trained to teach physics, but was expected to teach geology. Now an assistant professor at Brigham-Young University, Nixon has teamed up with Julie A. Luft, Athletic Association Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Science Education, and other researchers to look at the effects this out-of-field teaching has on new teachers. Among their findings: 40 percent of these new teachers taught mostly or entirely out of field, and 64 percent had at least one out of field course in their first five years.
