The College of Education Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Conference is designed for students, faculty, staff, and community members to engage in dialogue and collaborative learning about the current multicultural and social justice issues of our times. The purpose of this dialogue and collaborative learning is to build a more just and equitable environment within our college and community, while fostering sustainability in such movement-building.

Keynote speaker: Angie Thomas is the author of the New York Times No. 1 bestseller “The Hate U Give.” Her book was called “a stunning, brilliant, gut-wrenching novel that will be remembered as a classic of our time” and has already been adapted as a major feature film. In talks, Thomas gives context and background to the culture, politics, and movement behind the book.
Born, raised, and still residing in Jackson, Mississippi—and a former teen rapper—she holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Belhaven University and an unofficial degree in hip hop. She is an inaugural winner of the 2015 Walter Dean Myers Grant awarded by We Need Diverse Books. Film rights for her debut novel, “The Hate U Give,” have been optioned by Fox 2000 with George Tillman attached to direct and Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg attached to star.
