Join the Clarke County School District for professional learning event, reception

Demond Means, superintendent of the Clarke County School District, cordially invites all College of Education faculty to the district’s two-day 2018-2019 Professional Learning Event at the Classic Center.

From 8 to 11 a.m. on Monday, July 30, there will be a keynote address delivered by Kristine Mraz, an acclaimed author and instructional coach with New York City Public Schools. Her talk will center on literacy development. In addition, the district will introduce its literacy curriculum for the 2018-2019 academic year.

From 8 to 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31, Richard Milner, the Helen Faison Endowed Chair of Urban Education at the University of Pittsburgh, will deliver a keynote address on supporting the needs of students in high-poverty school districts. Dean Denise Spangler will provide welcoming remarks.

Faculty are also invited to a reception honoring Milner, which takes place 5-7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 30, at the Athens Community Career Academy, 440 Dearing Extension, Athens.

Milner is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and the recipient of the National Association of Multicultural Education’s Carl A. Grant Multicultural Research Award. Recently, he was honored with the John Dewey award for relating research to practice and the Innovations in Diversity, Teacher, and Teacher Education award from Division K of the American Educational Research Association. His research, teaching, and policy interests include urban teacher education, African-American literature, and the social context of education. In particular, Milner’s research examines policies and practices that support teacher success in urban schools.
