College mourns death of student leader

Amy Lee, a fourth-year student studying special education in the University of Georgia College of Education, died Wednesday morning following injuries she sustained in a car crash. She was 21.

A native of Dacula, Lee was also vice chair of the Student Ambassadors, a group of leaders who serve as official hosts and representatives of the College. In this role, she enjoyed meeting prospective students and giving them tours. She was also active in the UGA Wesley Foundation on campus.

Off campus, Lee relished her time in Athens and encouraged other students to take advantage of the city starting with their first day on campus. Lee served as a camp counselor with Extra Special People. In a statement on Extra Special People’s Facebook page, the organization noted the deep effect Lee had on children and the organization.

“Amy was joyful, funny, deeply intuitive and a master in providing the right touch of humble care,” the post read. “Amy spent the last few months of her life creating smiles, providing hope and showing love at ESP.”

Lee’s memorial service will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Wesley Main Chapel on Lumpkin Street.
