Fall Faculty Learning Series and cohort programs
The Office of Faculty Affairs offers a range of workshops and cohort programs for faculty development, learning, and success. More detailed descriptions of our workshops and faculty learning cohort programs are posted online and listed on this flier.
Workshops
- The fall Faculty Learning Series begins Aug. 7 and is offered most weeks through November. The series focuses on career development, leadership, and diversity.
- In addition, we have a new track for new and junior faculty that starts with a workshop, “How to Stay Sane as a New Professor,” and is offered exclusively to incoming new faculty. The Office of Faculty Affairs also is offering the Junior Faculty Learning Community (register online).
- If you’re getting ready to plan your faculty searches for the 2018-2019 academic year, consider scheduling a two-hour Faculty Search Committee Training for your search committee in advance of reviewing applications.
Email Susanna Calvert
to schedule a training.
- The Office of Faculty Affairs is partnering with the Office of Research and the Miller Learning Center to offer space for faculty writing from 7:30 to 9 a.m. each Wednesday and Friday this fall. Coffee and/or coffee discounts are available, as well as access to Office of Research’s Proposal Enhancement staff, OFA’s coach, Susanna Calvert, and facilitated goal-setting meetings. See our website for more information. Writing space also is available on the Gwinett campus on Saturdays this fall.
Faculty Learning Cohorts
- New Department Head Orientation: The orientation is open to new and continuing department heads, assistant or associate deans, and director-level leaders at UGA. The program meets four times for half a day during fall semester (Sept. 4, Oct. 1, Oct. 23, and Nov. 13); participation is expected for new department heads appointed between Sept. 1, 2017, and Aug. 31, 2018. Continuing academic leaders may register for one or more sessions, though we recommend participation in all four sessions. Advanced registration is required by Aug. 20; Register online (please make a note of the title, date, and times of your requested sessions).
- The Creating a Sustainable Writing Program is helping scores of faculty improve their writing productivity. This program is most effective when paired with writing at the Miller Learning Center (see above). The fall cohort meetings begin Aug. 7 and will be held bi-weekly thereafter.

Leadership Resources
- Department Head Leadership Luncheon: Interested in developing your leadership knowledge and skills? Come join other department heads over lunch for peer networking and mentoring, from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday of the month during the fall semester at the UGA Hotel and Conference Center (Aug. 28, Sept. 25, Oct. 30, and Nov. 27). Registation no later than the previous Thursday is required. Space is limited, so register early.
- Other Leadership Resources: Don’t forget that our Faculty Learning Series offers leadership topics every month. If you prefer 1:1 meetings, learning on your own, or if you wish to have customized workshops for your leadership team or your department,
please contact Susanna Calvert
to set up an appointment to see how we can help you meet your development needs.
