Kudos: Alvermann receives 2018 Adolescent Literacy Thought Leader Award

Donna Alvermann, Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, received the 2018 Adolescent Literacy Thought Leader Award at the annual meeting of the International Literacy Association (ILA) in Austin, Texas, on July 21.

This year’s conference theme, “Changemakers in Action”, focused on ILA leaders’ insights on what they know and what they still need to learn about adolescent readers and writers to effectively support their literacy development. In keeping with this theme, Alvermann’s keynote, “From change maker to challenge taker: A literacy project for you and me,” shared with participants in the Secondary Reading Interest Group how she was revamping her online new literacies course, LLED 7910, to reflect what she learned from Dr. Rachel Kaminski Sanders’ (PhD ’18) dissertation findings on broadening the modes of communication in language and literacy education.
