MotherScholar: Unbalanced strategies for success

  • Tuesday, Oct. 23
  • Noon-1 p.m.
  • Aderhold Hall Room 607

Facilitator: Melisa Cahnmann-Taylor, professor of language and literacy education in the College of Education

Is it possible for mothers who are faculty and students to have a work-life balance? What does it mean to navigate the competing demands of these roles? Come join a dynamic exploration of the misconception of what balance means for mothers in the academy. We will build on the term motherscholar proposed by Matias (2011) to bring rants (e.g. breastmilk pumping, scheduling, and tenure), recognitions (e.g., rewards and advantages of motherscholar identity); and requests (e.g., supports motherscholars have and need). Participants will leave with unbalanced strategies to navigate what “success” looks like in our community. This conversation will be inclusive of trans and nonbinary parents.

This event is co-sponsored by the College of Education’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Office of Faculty and Staff Services.
