As we enter into the new academic semester, we are offering new and returning faculty the opportunity to drop by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to discuss and integrate ways to diversify and center community groups whose history, voices, and contribution to academia is often marginalized and left out of academic syllabi. “Decolonization” technically refers to the undoing of colonialism and the repatriation of indigenous land. As faculty, it is important we take efforts to recognize how our fields and we as scholars benefit from colonization by silencing indigenous/first people, black community and African Americans, Latinx, queer and trans people, and scholars within the Middle Eastern and Asian diaspora.
While we know colonization can never truly be undone, we can ensure that our curriculum, training, and teaching practices decenter knowledge and knowledge production of white/European intellectuals as pillars of ultimate knowledge and magnify the history, innovations, narratives, and ideas of native/indigenous folks, queer and trans communities, black, Asian diaspora, and Latinx folks within our educational and training spaces. This practice is a small step in the larger work of decolonization by countless indigenous and native activist, scholars, and movements.
This space will offer instructors the opportunity to reflect critically on their syllabi, curriculum, and educational praxis. Don’t forget to bring your syllabus!
