Brown bag lunch lecture with Chris Redding

  • Date: Thursday, Oct. 3
  • Time: Noon-1:30 p.m.
  • Location: River’s Crossing Room 135

Chris Redding, Ph.D., from the University of Florida, will present a lecture titled, “Changing the Composition of the Beginning Teacher Workforce: The Role of State Alternative Certification Policies.”

New teachers have become a pronounced focus of policymakers over the past couple of decades. This recent policy attention toward new teachers is a result of both demographic shifts in the teacher labor market and increased attention to the quality of teachers assigned to historically underserved student populations.

Redding will present data on a nationally representative sample of teachers to show how the characteristics of beginning teachers, the schools in which they teach, and their turnover rates have changed over time. He will share his research of applying a difference-in-differences research design to understand the role of state-level alternative certification policies in changes in the characteristics of beginning teachers.

There will be time for questions and comments immediately following the lecture.
