Kudos: Graff appointed to international books award committee; Fisher accepted into CURA program

Associate professor appointed to international books award committee

Jennifer Graff, an associate professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, was recently appointed to serve on the U.S. Board on Books for Young People’s (USBBY) Outstanding International Books Award Committee.

USBBY is a nonprofit organization devoted to enhancing international relations through children’s and young adult books and serves as the U.S. national section of the International Board on Books for Young People. Every year, the Books Award Committee reads over 400 international books and is charged with selecting the most outstanding of those published during the calendar year.

“This opportunity is a significant honor and a serious responsibility I am eager to pursue with my fellow committee members,” said Graff, who will serve on the committee for two years. “We hope to contribute to the cultivation of joyful reading, global awareness and understanding, as well as personal and collective transformation.”

Fisher accepted into Center for Underrepresented Research in Addiction program

Sycarah Fisher, an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, was selected for admission into the 2020 Center for Underrepresented Research in Addiction (CURA) program.

CURA is a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-supported program that aims to promote the advancement of promising minority junior faculty members in drug addiction research. With her acceptance into the program, Fisher will have access to several enrichment opportunities.

“Being accepted into this program means a lot to me because it means that substance use experts and NIDA see my line of research as meaningful and that it has the potential to make an impact on the community,” she said. “The resources provided through this program will also potentially set me up for a successful research grant submission to the NIDA.”
