Kudos: Two books published by associate professors

Associate professor publishes book on single black mothers

Cheryl Fields-Smith, an associate professor in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, recently published a book titled, “Exploring Single Black Mothers’ Resistance Through Homeschooling.”

The book employs black feminist theory to relate the personal narratives of four single black mothers and the factors influencing their continued decisions to homeschool their children. Fields-Smith, whose research interests include family engagement, home-school-community partnerships, and homeschooling among black families, is currently working on a second book.

Associate professors publish book on functional linguistics and youth participatory action

Ruth Harman and Kevin Burke, associate professors in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, published “Culturally Sustaining Systemic Functional Linguistics Praxis” last month.

The publication features the innovative work of youth, doctoral students, and faculty with a focus on culturally sustaining systemic functional linguistics and youth participatory action research in local community and school sites. “When we get back to some normalcy, it’d be great to work with youth in embodied and artistic ways,” Harmon said.
