Associate professor receives Kofi Lomotey Outstanding Reviewer Award

Kevin Burke, an associate professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, received the 2019-2020 Kofi Lomotey Outstanding Reviewer Award from Urban Education.

Established in 2017, the award recognizes an individual’s exceptional quality and quantity of reviews during an academic year. “The journal does foundational work, pushing the field of educational research towards greater equity,” Burke said. “In that sense, it’s an honor to be affiliated in any way.”

Doctoral student receives Saeeda Peermahomed Award

Katja Sonkeng, a third-year doctoral candidate in sports management and policy in the Department of Kinesiology, received this year’s Saeeda Peermahomed Award. The award is given annually by International Student Life to recognize outstanding international students.

As an active member of the University community, Sonkeng volunteers with several UGA organizations, including the Mary Frances Early College of Education Student Ambassadors, UGA’s Blue Key Honor Society and the UGA NCBBA Men’s Basketball Club Team.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to receive this award,” she said. “It serves as a powerful reminder of my continuous commitment to growth and pushing the envelopes when needed, while serving as a strong but empathic and compassionate voice for the international student community at UGA and beyond.”
