Kudos: Harman and Burke receive Glickman Challenge Grant

Ruth Harman and Kevin Burke, both associate professors in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, are the recipients of the Glickman Challenge Grant provided by professor emeritus Carl Glickman and his wife, Sara, to support faculty in implementing collaborative projects in high-needs schools.

Harman and Burke’s project involves collaboration with Cedar Shoals High School’s peer leadership course. They will use resources from UGA, the Athens community, and the interdisciplinary support of teachers at Cedar Shoals High School to develop a social studies course focused on peer mentorship, civic leadership, and artistic vision.

In fall 2020, youth enrolled in social studies courses at Cedar Shoals High School will have opportunities to think deeply about community problems facing their home or school spaces by engaging in weekly workshops with University faculty and local leaders. By November 2020, the youth will decide on a key issue they want to address through a service and research project. In spring 2021, Harman’s UGA course on youth civic leadership will be held at the school, and graduate students will support the youth in developing their research and service projects related to the community issue and in developing compelling written and oral argumentation for a legislative session with county commissioners in April 2021.
