Remembering professor emeritus Michael LaMorte
It is with great sadness that the College announces the passing of Michael LaMorte, professor emeritus, on Sunday, July 5.
LaMorte, who retired from UGA in 1992, taught graduate courses in school law, economics of education, and politics of education. He served as associate dean for services in the College of Education from 1982 to 1988 and associate dean for policy from 1988 until his retirement.
Many current faculty members in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration, and Policy fondly remember their former colleague. In his career, LaMorte worked closely with those who had been involved with legal attacks on school financing in Georgia and other states. He was a consultant to the Education Committees of the Georgia General Assembly, the Governor’s Office, and the Georgia State Department of Education. His recommendations pertaining to equalizing Georgia’s method of financing education were enacted into law. He conducted the Georgia Educational Policy Seminar for the state’s highest policy makers.
LaMorte joined the UGA faculty in 1969. He received his Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of California at Berkeley.
