DEI considerations for your syllabus and pedagogy

Part 1: Diversifying Your Syllabus

This is part one in a two-part series, “DEI Considerations for Your Syllabus and Pedagogy: A Co-Learning Series with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” As we enter into the new academic semester, new and returning faculty and graduate student instructors are invited to join the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in conversations about ways to integrate DEI considerations into their syllabi.

We’ll move through a checklist designed to support us in clarifying our DEI values and centering communities whose histories, voices, and contributions are too often marginalized and left out of academic syllabi. As instructors, it is important we make every effort to critically interrogate the messages our syllabi send and to implement strategies that magnify the history, innovations, narratives, and ideas of native/Indigenous, queer and trans, Black, Asian diaspora, and Latinx communities within our teaching and learning settings.

This space will offer instructors the opportunity to reflect critically on their syllabi, so you’re invited to bring your spring 2021 syllabus draft(s), so we can learn from and with one another.

Part 2: DEI Considerations for Your Pedagogy

We invite faculty and instructors to join the DEI Office for a workshop on incorporating DEI considerations into our pedagogy and practice. We’ll discuss strategies for facilitating equitable and affirming learning environments that support our students’ diverse range of identities and experiences while also preparing us to challenge oppressive dynamics that can arise in classroom spaces. In this co-learning space, we’ll think together about what it looks like to foster just and equitable learning settings where all participants can thrive.
