Fiorella receives OIBR Rising Star Award
Logan Fiorella, an assistant professor in the College’s Department of Educational Psychology, received the Rising Star Award from the Owens Institute for Behavioral Research (OIBR) on Dec. 10. The award includes a commemorative plaque and a $1,000 research fund. UGA’s OBIR addresses the world’s most pressing health, economic, social, educational, and policy challenges through the facilitation and promotion of social and behavioral science research.
The OIBR Rising Star Award recognizes the scholarly achievements and future potential of an OIBR Fellow or Affiliate who is within eight years of their Ph.D. The inaugural award focuses on exceptional and sustained research contributions and future promise. Fiorella’s research explores the cognitive science of student learning and its implications for instruction.
“There are many amazing early career faculty associated with OIBR, so it’s a great honor to receive this award,” he said.

Cuenca receives College and University Faculty Assembly Early Career Award
Alex Cuenca (Ph.D. ’11), an alumnus of the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, received the Early Career Award from the College and University Faculty Assembly (CUFA) at the organization’s annual meeting in December. CUFA is associated with the National Council of Social Studies.
The Early Career Award, given to a scholar in the early stages of his or her career, recognizes a significant impact in the field of social studies education, which may include exemplary research/scholarship, teacher preparation, professional development, curriculum development, and/or community work. Cuenca is a faculty member in the School of Education at Indiana University, Bloomington.
Duncan receives Kipchoge Neftali Kirkland Social Justice Award
Kristen Duncan (Ph.D. ’16), an alumna of the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, received CUFA’s Kipchoge Neftali Kirkland Social Justice Award at the organization’s annual meeting in December.
The Kipchoge Neftali Kirkland Social Justice Award recognizes an exemplary paper presented at the CUFA annual meeting that makes a distinguished and significant contribution to promoting social justice in educational research and teaching. Duncan is a faculty member in the College of Education at Clemson University.
