Updated: Incorporating pronouns and avoiding deadnames in personal introductions and syllabi
Incorporating pronouns when getting to know someone is a matter of valuing and affirming their identity. We know that gender is not binary, but rather a broad and fluid range of identities and expressions. Therefore, we cannot assume to know someone’s pronouns based on their outward appearance. If any professor or teacher seeks to thoughtfully connect with and educate their class, pronoun education and introductions are essential.
