Historic Georgian African American newspapers

The Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) is pleased to announce the digitization of two historically significant Georgia African American newspapers as part of a National Digital Newspaper Program grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The digital images are included on the Library of Congress’ newspaper website Chronicling America and the DLG’s website Georgia Historic Newspapers. The newspapers include the Savannah Tribune (1886-1888), which was founded in 1875 and, except for two hiatuses, is one of the longest-running African American newspapers in the South, and the Athens Republique (1921-1924), which served the African American community in Athens and surrounding towns.
