Media mention: Fields-Smith featured in NBC on home schooling
More African-American families, particularly in the South, are home schooling their children because of the lack of Black history in public school curricula, as well as the disproportionate disciplining of Black students.
Cheryl Fields-Smith, an associate professor in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, spoke with NBC regarding the increase of Black families home schooling, particularly in the last year due to the pandemic.
“It’s the education we thought we were going to get when we desegregated,” said Fields-Smith. “Access to the things that are going to enrich our children—not only their brains but their spirits and how they see themselves in the world.”
