The United Campus Workers of Georgia Local Gender Equity Committee in partnership with the Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council’s monthly film screening presents the documentary, “9to5: The Story of a Movement,” followed by a panel discussion.
9to5, the National Association of Working Women, was founded in 1973 by women clerical workers in Boston who were frustrated with their low pay, lack of opportunities for advancement, and the climate of disrespect in which they worked. 9to5 won a $1.5 million back pay class-action lawsuit, and in 1975, joined with the Service Employees International Union to create a union for clerical workers. The organization is still active today and is in the midst of a legislative campaign in Georgia.
Panelists include:
- Dana Caldemeyer, assistant professor of history at South Georgia State College
- Michelle Haberland, professor of history at Georgia Southern University
- Amelia Haynes Wheeler, doctoral student in the College’s Department of Educational Theory and Practice
