General session: Fostering Sense of Belonging, Supporting Student Success in a New Normal

Terrell Strayhorn, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Virginia Union University (VUU), will address how instructors’ work with and for students’ sense of belonging on campus has been impacted by COVID-19, international unrest, and the quest for racial justice.

Strayhorn also serves as professor of urban education in VUU’s Evelyn Reid Syphax School of Education and director of the Center for the Study of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Additionally, he is the author of 11 books, including “College Students’ Sense of Belonging: A Key to Educational Success for All Students.”

This event is hosted by the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the Mary Frances Early College of Education and is sponsored by the New Approaches to Promote Diversity and Inclusion grant program. The event is open to all UGA students, staff, faculty, and administrators.

Faculty session: Fostering a Sense of Belonging in the Classroom

Faculty in the Mary Frances Early College of Education and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences are invited to attend a special interactive session with Strayhorn. This session is an extension of Strayhorn’s address to the UGA community on students’ sense of belonging amidst COVID-19, international unrest, and the quest for racial justice. Strayhorn will host a dialogue with faculty about supporting students and fostering a sense of belonging in their programs and classes.

Graduate student session: Navigating Graduate School and Building Community

Graduate students in the Mary Frances Early College of Education and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences are invited to attend a special interactive session with Strayhorn. This session is an extension of Strayhorn’s address to the UGA community on students’ sense of belonging amidst COVID-19, international unrest, and the quest for racial justice. Strayhorn will host a dialogue with graduate students about navigating graduate school and finding community.
