Call for nominations: SEC Emerging Scholars Program

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) Provosts have established an emerging scholars program to provide professional development and networking opportunities for current doctoral students and a limited number of postdoctoral researchers who are considering careers in higher education. The SEC Emerging Scholars Program is meant to encourage top scholars, with attention provided to those from historically underrepresented groups, to seek out employment and mentorship in the SEC.

The University of Georgia is now accepting nominations for participants to attend the inaugural event of the program—the SEC Emerging Scholars Career Preparation Workshop. This virtual workshop will be held Sept. 29-30 and will encourage top scholars, particularly those from historically underrepresented groups, to pursue careers at SEC member universities.

  • Nomination deadline: Friday, Aug. 6

Scholars who participate in the career preparation workshop will be expected to attend the entire multi-day event, complete several pre-workshop assignments, and visit with representatives from all 14 SEC universities on a range of topics, including the hiring process.

Each UGA program may nominate one doctoral student and one postdoctoral researcher for consideration. Nominees should be interested in seeking a career in higher education, have demonstrated exceptional research and/or teaching skill, and be near completion of their doctoral dissertation.

A committee of UGA faculty members and administrators will select up to 10 participants, three of whom may be postdoctoral researchers. Selection of graduate students will be overseen by the Graduate School, and Graduate Coordinators will receive detailed information on eligibility requirements and nomination packet materials. Postdoctoral researchers will receive detailed information on the application process via the postdoc listserv from the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.

If you have questions, please contact Meredith Welch-Devine, UGA Graduate School assistant dean.
