Inclusive and equitable teaching strategies for back to school

As you prepare for the fall semester, the College’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) encourages you to incorporate inclusive and equitable practices into your courses.

When thinking about the first day of class and introductions, consider the Incorporating Pronouns and Avoiding Deadnames in Personal Introductions and Syllabi statement written by the DEI ambassadors and the expansion of the statement, Supporting Students with All Communication Needs and Abilities: Expanding on the Mary Frances Early College of Education Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Student Ambassadors’ Statement about Personal Introductions in Classrooms written by faculty in the Department of Communication Sciences and Special Education.

This pronouncing students name graphic explains the importance of honoring students by learning and pronouncing their names. The Inclusive Teaching Practices Toolkit outlines 10 strategies for inclusive and effective teaching. If you enjoy podcasts, check out Teaching in Higher Ed (the cultural competence episodes) and the Lecture Breakers. Lastly, the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity has archived webinars to help with course planning with inclusion and equity in mind. You have free access to this resource through UGA.

If you need additional support in creating inclusive and equitable learning environments, please email the DEI Office.
