Focus on Faculty: Assistant professor makes the most out of educational assessments
When speaking to Matthew Madison, an assistant professor in the College of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology, it’s evident that he’s passionate about three things: his family, research, and teaching.
Madison conducts research to help educators get the most out of educational assessments, which are the methods and instruments used to measure student knowledge like standardized tests. To help teachers obtain useful information from these assessments, he uses statistics and data science.
“I spend a lot of time developing authentic assessments and giving students the opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned in different ways such as projects, data visualizations, oral presentations, and written reports,” he said. “As a teacher, I think about the types of information I need to be the best educator that I can be and what types of information students need to be active in their learning.”
