Media mention: Fields-Smith quoted on growth of homeschooling among Black families
Cheryl Fields-Smith, associate professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, spoke on the increase in Black families turning to homeschooling in a recent Time Magazine story.
Factors including the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent removal of books by Black authors have contributed to the switch.
“Homeschooling has become such a refuge for many families, Black families in particular, that they don’t have to go to the under-resourced school that they were assigned,” Fields-Smith said. “They have an option where someone can create for them a really positive, nurturing, learning environment.”
