Attend a virtual DEI Speaker Series session on April 12

  • Date: Tuesday, April 12
  • Time: Noon-1 p.m.
  • Location: Zoom (register today)

The world is facing a number of crises, namely inequities in education, health care, and access to healthy living conditions and economic opportunities. As researchers, we have a choice: to consciously design research that contributes to justice or to be complicit in sustaining the status quo.

Join Jori Hall, professor in the qualitative research and evaluation methodologies program in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration, and Policy, for an informal conversation on how culturally responsive (CR) focus groups can play a vital role in addressing inequities. Participants in this session will discuss:

  • What makes a focus group culturally responsive
  • Important considerations when developing, implementing, and moderating CR focus groups
  • Different ways researchers might pursue equity through CR focus groups in their studies

Hall is an award-winning author and multidisciplinary researcher concerned with social inequalities and the overall rigor of social science research. She has published numerous peer-reviewed works in scholarly venues; authored the book “Focus Groups: Culturally Responsive Approaches for Qualitative Inquiry and Program Evaluation;” and was selected as a Leaders of Equitable Evaluation and Diversity fellow by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Hall is the 2020 recipient of the American Evaluation Association’s Multiethnic Issues in Evaluation Topical Interest Group Scholarly Leader Award for scholarship that contributed to culturally responsive evaluation. She is also the co-interim editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Evaluation.

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Speaker Series serves as a space for College community members to come together for an hour of learning and thinking alongside scholars and activists from within and outside the College who are doing justice-related work. The College encourages all members of the community to participate in its programs and activities.

For more information about the series, please contact the DEI Office. Registration is required for this event.
