Cooper quoted about heat rules in AccuWeather

Bud Cooper, a clinical professor and clinical education coordinator in the Department of Kinesiology, was recently quoted in an AccuWeather story about heat rules aimed at reducing heat-related illnesses among student athletes.

Cooper helped develop heat rules for Georgia student athletes to acclimate to practicing in hot weather, which includes rest breaks, hydration breaks, and equipment worn by athletes.

“We developed a schedule basically that said that when you fall in a certain category, this is how many rest breaks you have to have, this is how many hydration breaks you have to have, this is the amount of equipment you can wear,” Cooper said. “As the environment gets hotter and hotter, we have to shorten practice, increase rest breaks, increase hydration breaks, and start taking equipment off.”

Fields-Smith discusses homeschooling among Black families with The Sacramento Observer, CBS News

Cheryl Fields-Smith, an associate professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, discussed her experience talking with Black families who turned to homeschooling with the The Sacramento Observer and CBS News.

Fields-Smith has spoken with over 70 families and said they often transition to homeschooling when traditional schools are segregated or underserved.

“If you really sit down and read all of our educational history here in this country, you’ll see that today’s homeschooling movement among Black people is aligned with our notions of self-determination and self-agency, particularly surrounding getting access to excellence and education for our children,” she told The Observer.
