Media mention: Fields-Smith quoted in PublicSource

Cheryl Fields-Smith, a professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, spoke about homeschooling among Black families in a recent article by PublicSource.

She said homeschooling can be a refuge for students who are bullied in school, and that once they begin homeschooling, families sometimes have to tailor their teaching methods to their children.

“Sometimes they set out to teach their children in the way that they themselves learn. And then they realize it’s not working because their child learns a whole different way,” Fields-Smith said.
