Media mention: Fields-Smith quoted about Black families homeschooling

Cheryl-Fields Smith, professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, was recently quoted in a CNN article about Black families turning to homeschooling.

She said Black families are choosing homeschooling for a multitude of reasons, such as bullying and higher rates of discipline directed toward Black students.

“I conceptualize it as a form of resistance,” Fields-Smith said. “Instead of accepting the status quo, families are resisting what’s happening in their schools.”
