Faculty members, students attend National Science Teaching Association conference

Faculty members and students in the Mary Frances Early College of Education recently attended the National Science Teaching Association’s (NSTA) conference in Atlanta.

Julie A. Luft, the Athletic Association Professor of Science Education and Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Education, is president-elect of the NSTA and attended the conference. Noyce science education scholars in the College attended the conference and called the dawgs.

Additionally, Georgia Hodges, associate research scientist and MAT coordinator in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Education, and Holly Amerman, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Education, recruited teachers for the College’s new leadership program.


Faculty members receive 2023 American Psychological Association awards

Two faculty members in the Mary Frances Early College of Education’s Department of Education Psychology recently received awards from the American Psychological Association (APA).

Scott Ardoin, associate dean for research and graduate education and professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, won the 2023 APA Division 25 Fred S. Keller Behavioral Education Award. Denis Dumas, associate professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, won the 2023 APA Division 10 Daniel E. Berlyne Award.

Word in Black includes Fields-Smith on list of influential Black women educators

Cheryl Fields-Smith, professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, was recently recognized by Word in Black as one of 12 influential Black women in education.

Founded in 2021, Word in Black is a national newsroom led by a collaboration of Black publishers, including AFRO News, The Atlanta Voice, Dallas Weekly, Seattle Medium, Washington Informer, and more.

“I am deeply overwhelmed in seeing my name listed among these amazing educators, including my own highly esteemed dissertation chair, Vanessa Siddle Walker,” said Fields-Smith. “I’m grateful that the author has valued my work to the extent of positioning me among such incredible mavericks.”

McCullick receives award from SHAPE America

Bryan McCullick, professor and coordinator of the health and physical education teacher-preparation program in the Department of Kinesiology, received the 2023 Research Council Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America).

The award recognizes a SHAPE America member whose service and impact significantly contributed to the organization’s Research Council.
