Media mention: Fields-Smith referenced in Yahoo News

Cheryl Fields-Smith, professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, was recently quoted in CNN and Yahoo News articles about the changing demographics of homeschooling.

Data from the U.S. Census and U.S. Department of Education showed increases in homeschool enrollment for Black, Hispanic, and Asian students for the 2020-21 school year, with Black families making the switch for various reasons.

“I conceptualize it as a form of resistance,” Fields-Smith told CNN, later reported on by Yahoo News. “Instead of accepting the status quo, families are resisting what’s happening in their schools.”
