Kudos: Schey receives journal awards for article and reviewing; College students, staff receive awards at BFSO Luncheon

Schey receives journal awards for article and reviewing

Ryan Schey, an assistant professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, was recently recognized for his publishing and reviewing with the journal “English Teaching: Practice and Critique” through Emerald Publishing’s 2023 Literati Awards.

His article, “Queer and trans youth (not) knowing: experiences of epistemic (in) justice in the context of an LGBTQ+-inclusive secondary curriculum,” was recognized as the journal’s outstanding article of the year. It will be available for free via Emerald’s site for the next year. The article highlights the experiences and voices of queer and trans youth in secondary classrooms, describing how they navigate knowledge and (in)justice during LGBTQ+ inclusive lessons with respect to identities such as race and class. In this way, his award-winning publication adds to the robust body of empirical and theoretical scholarship demonstrating the necessity of centering justice and challenging anti-LGBTQ+ and racist values as one key element of teaching practices that foster youths’ literacy learning.

He was also recognized as the journal’s outstanding reviewer for the past year.
