National Preparedness Month: Let’s talk shelter

While at home, you probably know where to shelter in case of a storm or threat. You should also identify a safe shelter location for severe weather and tornadoes where you work.

Take time to ensure that faculty, staff, students, and visitors know where to shelter in times of severe weather. Signs should be displayed and easily visible to all individuals onsite.

  • Aderhold Hall: Ground floor, back hallway nearest room G20
  • Ramsey Student Center: First floor hallway in the academic wing or the locker rooms
  • River’s Crossing: Ground floor, hallway furthest from the doors

In the event of an active threat and you cannot evacuate, you need to hide. Locate a room and secure it by locking and blocking the door with heavy furniture. Turn off any lights and silence your cell phone and any other source of noise. Hide the best you can and remain quiet. Call 911 if possible and if you cannot talk, leave the line open allowing the dispatcher to listen.
