Join the College’s qualitative research program for the UGA QUAL Lab Speaker Series, “Temporalities in/of Ethnography: Queer(ing) Time in Studying School Literacy and Language Practices,” presented by Ryan Schey.

During this QUAL Lab, Schey will discuss his work on school-based ethnography and queer temporalities. Schey foregrounds this work in the idea that ethnographers studying oral and written oral language practices discuss time as an integral part of ethnography, such as the traditional idea that ethnographies have a minimum time requirement of fieldwork, often of at least a year (e.g., Blommaert & Jie, 2020; Heath & Street, 2008).

In this talk, rather than treating time as a background ambience, he considers how time is actively constructed by ethnographers and cultural members. Schey will discuss examples from an ethnography he conducted at a high school in the midwestern U.S., in which he explored how students and teachers talked, wrote, and read about sexual and gender diversity. He then read these ethnographic vignettes through queer theories of time, ultimately reflecting on how ethnographers might rethink time in fieldwork, data analysis, and ethnography broadly as a genre.
