Recent changes to clinical faculty guidelines

The University Council approved several changes to the clinical faculty guidelines last spring. These changes include:

  • Language prohibiting “administrative transfers between tenure track and clinical track positions” has been replaced with language allowing “[t]ransfers from clinical to tenure track … in exceptional circumstances.” In such situations, all requirements for faculty appointments must be met, including faculty vote and appointment procedures outlined in the Academic Affairs Policy Manual 1.09. Consistent with past practice, transfers (or conversions) from tenure track to clinical track also may be requested, subject to approval by the Equal Opportunity Office and the provost. Any transfers should only occur under extraordinary circumstances. Faculty members in any track who wish to consider transferring to another track should first consult with their department head and the Mary Frances Early College of Education Office of Faculty and Staff Services to ensure they understand the process and the implications of requesting a transfer.
  • The required time in rank for promotion from clinical assistant professor to clinical associate professor is corrected from four years to five years to align with USG policy, USG Academic & Student Affairs Handbook 4.6 Promotion, and UGA promotion timelines for other faculty tracks. The corrected time in rank of five years will apply to applications for promotion beginning with preliminary consideration in spring 2024.
  • The criteria for clinical associate professor and clinical professor ranks are clarified to specify that comparable training, background, and experience may be considered for initial appointment to those ranks but not for reducing time in rank, unless approved as credit toward promotion at the time of appointment.
  • As communicated by an administrative memo, dated May 8, 2023, inclusion of annual evaluations will be phased in for inclusion in the dossiers for third year and promotion review, beginning with the 2024-25 promotion cycle.
