Zhai gives talk on use of AI in science education

Xiaoming Zhai, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Education, was invited to give a talk to state education leaders about using AI to support assessment in science. This talk is part of a series that emerged from a desire from the Council of Chief State School Officers Science Collaborative and State Performance Assessment Learning Community (SPA-LC) to understand the advances in AI; opportunities for using AI in classrooms; possibilities and trade-offs for AI use in assessment design, task engagement, and scoring; teaching about AI; and equity and ethics around AI use.

This talk was moderated by Bill Penuel at University of Colorado Boulder and will serve as a foundation for further work and exploration through the Science Collaborative, Council of State Science Supervisors, and SPA-LC. Funding support for the series comes from the Learning Policy Institute.
