Cahnmann-Taylor appointed Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor

Melisa Cahnmann-Taylor, a professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, has been appointed to a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorship, the University of Georgia’s highest award for teaching.

She joined the Mary Frances Early College of Education in 2002 and has received several recognitions from the College and the University, including the First Year Odyssey Teaching Award in 2018 and her induction into the UGA Teaching Academy.

“Dr. Cahnmann-Taylor exhibits teaching excellence at the University of Georgia and around the world,” said Allison Nealy, head of the Department of Language and Literacy Education. “She has contributed to the overall quality of interdisciplinary, multilingual, and transnational education on campus.”

Abraham receives UGA’s Bobbi Meeler Sahm Award for Service and Outreach

Anna Abraham, the E. Paul Torrance Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and director of the Torrance Center for Creativity and Talent Development, received UGA’s 2024 Bobbi Meeler Sahm Service and Outreach Award to support a partnership between the Torrance Center and Clarke County School District.

Created and named for UGA alumna Bobbi Meeler Sahm, the award recognizes and supports public service partnerships between the university and organizations in Athens.

The $10,000 award will fund need-based scholarships for Clarke County students to attend the Torrance Center’s Creative Explorers Camp, a summer day camp for rising third-fifth graders. Running for six weeks beginning the week of June 3, the camp sessions will introduce students to creativity across disciplines, including visual art, music, food, and nature.

College’s student ambassadors receive Outstanding Membership Engagement Award

The Mary Frances Early College of Education’s student ambassadors received the 2023-24 Outstanding Membership Engagement Award at the H. Gordon and Francis S. Davis Student Engagement Awards ceremony.

The award recognizes a student organization that best fosters a sense of belonging and community in its membership through purposeful retention of its members, community-building experiences, and overall engagement from its general membership.
