Emily Rosenzweig, an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, spoke with Education Week about how teachers can motivate students in STEM subjects.

Research has shown that students crave more autonomy over their work when students move into middle school, and Rosenzweig said that making subject matter relevant to students and providing them choices can help boost motivation.

“The more you can make STEM content connected to students’ own experiences, their interests, their identities, the better off instructors will be, the more likely these classrooms will foster high-quality motivation for learning,” she said.
