Improving STEM Learning Outcomes with Adaptive Testing
High DFW rates in large introductory STEM courses present a significant challenge. To address this, we developed an AI-based diagnostic testing tool that provides personalized assessments and targeted feedback. By utilizing computer-adaptive testing and cognitive diagnostic models, the tool helps educators identify areas where students need further support. Additionally, it enhances fairness by screening for biased items. This innovative approach aims to improve student outcomes and promote equity in STEM education.
About the speaker: Hua-Hua Chang is the Charles R. Hicks Chair Professor in Education at Purdue University and a leading figure in educational measurement. He has made substantial contributions to both theoretical and practical aspects of fields such as computerized adaptive testing, cognitive diagnosis, and differential item functioning. Chang’s current research focuses on the development of innovative web-based assessment tools designed to enhance personalized learning. A former president of the Psychometric Society and fellow of AERA and ASA, he is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2017 E. F. Lindquist Award (AERA and ACT), the 2021 NCME Career Contribution Award, and the 2024 Samuel J. Messick Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions (APA Division 5).
