Please join us for our fifth USG Science of Reading Higher Education Consortium Professional Learning session on “Exploring Language Through Writing: The Science of Reading and Composing.” We are pleased to host JeanMarie Farrow from Georgia State University to lead this informative talk.
This webinar explores the connection between early writing instruction and the science of reading, focusing on how composing fosters the integration of key language systems essential for literacy development. In particular, structured composing lessons can enhance children’s phonological, syntactic, and semantic knowledge, strengthening both writing and reading skills. By integrating writing into early literacy instruction, teachers can better support children’s overall language development and future academic success.
JeanMarie Farrow is an experienced educator with over 20 years in the classroom, working with students from pre-kindergarten to high school who struggle with reading and writing. Her research focuses on understanding how children learn language, particularly academic language features critical to literacy development, and identifying effective instructional practices to accelerate language and literacy growth for children at risk of literacy difficulties. Additionally, Farrow investigates how to best support teachers in implementing evidence-based practices through practice-based, strength- focused, and adaptive professional learning approaches. She serves as the director of the reading endorsement and literacy specialists programs at Georgia State University.
