O’Connor referenced in Daily Mail

Patrick O’Connor, a professor in the Department of Kinesiology, was referenced in a Daily Mail article about how smartwatches and wearable technology may help people monitor their diets.

O’Connor worked with Samsung Research to develop the “energy score” measurement used in the Galaxy Watch. He said that the use of wearable tech can fuel healthy choices, but may not be adopted by everyone since health can be a sensitive subject.

“This question about why are people not fully taking advantage of technology to improve their health, there’s a lot of reasons,” he said. “For some people, it doesn’t feel good to get a message that I’m not eating perfectly or sleeping adequately or being active enough—that’s a stressor.”

Zhai quoted in Medill on the Hill

Xiaoming Zhai, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Education, was quoted in an article from Medill on the Hill about the future of ChatGPT in education as its parent company shifts to a for-profit corporation.

Last May, ChatGPT’s parent company, OpenAI, launched a version of ChatGPT for use in universities called ChatGPT Edu, but Zhai said the cost might make it less accessible.

“I do wish that OpenAI would open some opportunity or program to use their models in school settings,” said Zhai. “Hopefully that can be free for students, so that it can really make a difference to education.”
