From the Dean: Telework update

As has been discussed since March, the University System of Georgia is returning to pre-COVID expectations that staff members be present in the office during regularly scheduled business hours, effective July 1. This is not specific to the Mary Frances Early College of Education or to the University of Georgia; all USG institutions are doing this, consistent with national trends for both the private sector and government agencies.

All existing telework agreements will expire June 30, regardless of the expiration date on the most recent agreement. It is important that we all be consistent with adherence to these expectations so that we do not create inequities across units within our College or between us and other units on campus.

Supervisors will retain the authority to approve one-off telework arrangements for a particular day to meet an individual’s needs and still keep work flowing, but these situations should be rare and infrequent.

Telework will still be considered as part of an ADA accommodation or an FMLA situation or in other special circumstances. If a new request needs to be submitted, there is a new, online tool for making such requests. Please contact the Office of Faculty and Staff Services with questions about the new process and requirements.

Previously approved flextime agreements will remain in effect.

I know this change is disappointing to many people, but please know this change does not reflect a lack of appreciation for our talented and dedicated staff members. We hold our staff in high regard and place high value on your job satisfaction. If you have suggestions for improving the work environment in the College, please reach out to me at dspangler@uga.edu, make an appointment to meet with me, or channel your suggestions through your Staff Representative Group representative.
